VPN (Virtual Private Network) service it is a technique which enables the connection between two machines (computers) with the use of public network (e.g. the Internet) in such a way that the computers ‘can contact each other’ as if they were in one network. What is more, a data transmitted in a VPN tunnel can be cyphered.
University staff are offered a VPN service, which enables working from a remote location (e.g. home or business trip location), as if the user’s computer was connected to the University network. This option is especially useful to academic teachers who, at home, can fill in exam assessment record lists in Moja PG system.
To whom?
This service is available to the university employees who possess:
- active account in Moja PG system
- valid account password to Moja PG system
- valid Gdańsk Tech root certificate
- valid personal certificate
How to get access?
Computers with Windows and Linux operational systems require OpenVPN software installation. Workstations with OS X (Apple) operational systems require Tunnelblick software. In order to install OpenVPN or Tunnelblick software, the user must have access to administrative permissions in the operating system.
It occurs at times that the Internet suppliers purposefully restrain the ways of gaining connection or they configure them in a specific way, thus influencing effectiveness of VPN connections setup. There can occur locations where the VPN connection with the Gdańsk Tech network will be restricted or even impossible. When such a situation takes place (and after a consultation with Gdańsk Tech Helpdesk), ask your Internet supplier for detailed information.
